PACFAIE is building the peer-review panel for the PACFAIE Review, a scholarly publication on the ethical, social, legal, and governance dimensions of artificial intelligence. Ahead of our first call for papers, we invite scholars, practitioners, and policy experts to join the reviewer pool.

Scope

What the journal covers

Peer reviewers shape the intellectual quality and credibility of the journal. We are seeking people who can offer rigorous, constructive, and timely evaluations of submitted manuscripts across a broad range of topics, including but not limited to:

  • Ethical frameworks for AI design, deployment, and governance
  • Algorithmic bias, fairness, and accountability
  • AI safety, alignment, and existential risk
  • Data privacy and surveillance
  • Labour, economic, and social impacts of automation
  • AI in high-stakes domains: healthcare, criminal justice, finance, warfare
  • Regulatory and legal approaches to AI governance
  • Philosophy of technology and the moral status of AI systems
  • Human-AI interaction and trust
  • Global and cross-cultural perspectives on AI ethics

Reviewers from every relevant discipline

We welcome applications from academics, researchers, and practitioners across disciplines, including philosophy, computer science, law, sociology, public policy, science and technology studies, and related fields, who share a commitment to responsible, evidence-based scholarship on AI ethics.

Qualifications

What we ask of reviewers

Prospective reviewers should meet the following criteria.

Academic and professional background

  • A doctoral degree (PhD, JD, or equivalent) in a relevant field such as computer science, law, ethics, public policy, or sociology, or equivalent professional experience and demonstrated subject-matter expertise in AI ethics, governance, or a closely related area.
  • A demonstrated record of scholarship, publication, or professional practice relevant to AI ethics. This may include peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, policy work, or applied research.

Subject-matter expertise

  • Specialised knowledge in one or more of the journal's focus areas listed above.
  • Familiarity with current debates, literature, and methodological standards within your area of expertise.

Reviewing experience and skills

  • Prior experience reviewing academic manuscripts, grant proposals, or conference submissions is preferred, but it is not required of early-career scholars with strong subject expertise.
  • The ability to assess both the technical and empirical rigour of a submission and its ethical and normative reasoning.
  • Strong analytical and written communication skills, with the ability to give clear, constructive, actionable feedback.

Professional conduct

  • A commitment to maintaining the confidentiality of unpublished manuscripts.
  • The ability to identify and disclose potential conflicts of interest.
  • Willingness to follow the journal's code of ethics and peer-review guidelines, including fairness, objectivity, and respect toward authors.

Availability and responsiveness

  • The ability to complete reviews within the journal's standard turnaround time, typically two weeks per manuscript.
  • Willingness to review a minimum of two manuscripts per review cycle, depending on availability and expertise match.
The role

What reviewing involves

  • Evaluating manuscripts for originality, methodological soundness, ethical reasoning, clarity, and contribution to the field.
  • Providing written feedback to authors, with a recommendation: accept, minor revisions, major revisions, or reject.
  • Maintaining impartiality and confidentiality throughout the review process.
  • Optionally, contributing to discussions on journal policy, special issues, and thematic calls for papers.
