Building Africa's capacity for responsible artificial intelligence
Download the official report from the inaugural AI Ethics Summer School — a PACFAIE capacity-building programme designed to equip emerging African researchers, professionals, students and policymakers with practical knowledge of AI ethics, governance and responsible innovation.
The AI Ethics Summer School 2024 Report documents the inaugural edition of PACFAIE's flagship learning programme, held virtually from 5 to 27 August 2024.
The programme brought together 48 selected participants from 10 African countries for a structured learning experience covering the ethical, legal, technical and policy dimensions of artificial intelligence. It was created to address the growing need for accessible, Africa-centred AI ethics education and to support the development of responsible AI practitioners across the continent.
The report provides an overview of the programme's vision, design, implementation and outcomes. It includes details on participant selection, curriculum structure, facilitators, partnerships, learning activities, challenges, lessons learned and recommendations for future editions.
It also captures how the 2024 Summer School laid the foundation for a growing African community of students, researchers, professionals and policymakers committed to shaping the future of responsible AI.
